Shortly after 6:00 p.m. Rome time (12:00 p.m. ET) on Thursday, May 8, white smoke poured from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, signaling to the faithful and the world that a new Bishop of Rome, the 266th successor of St. Peter, had been elected.
Welcome Pope Leo XIV: the first American pope!
Our newly elected pope, born Robert Francis Prevost, is a native of Chicago and an Augustinian missionary. Before becoming pope, he served at the Vatican as prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops under the late Pope Francis.
A Mass of Thanksgiving for the election of Pope Leo XIV will be celebrated by Bishop Walkowiak tomorrow, Friday, May 9, at 12:05 p.m. at the Cathedral of Saint Andrew.
